I organized a dozen or so two day 5 or 6 band fests, a couple per year throughout the eighties and early nineties. Most of you would probably recognize the bigger names like the Feelies, Yo La Tengo, the db’s, the Bongos (all of whom I love!) I went on the organize an ongoing local rock music festival at a place called Modern Artists Studios, which was one block from where I still live in Rahway, NJ. During this era, I started discovering, befriending and reviewing dozens of Jersey bands. There is where my music writing really flourished so a hats off to JB editor Jim Testa. From the late seventies until around the time DMG opened in 1991, I wrote for Jersey Beat Fanzine. Although, I did hear some songs by the Buzzcocks back then, I didn’t really notice this song until it was covered by the Lunar Bear Ensemble several years later. The above song, “I Believe”, was recorded by the Buzzcocks in the 1979. ![]() I find hope in such things and then try to share that with you, all serious listeners. I try to listen to at least 1 record or CD every day to hear something that I have never heard before, giving a chance for stranger or distant friend to show us his or her sonic world. I go back to old standards seeking universal truths as well as searching for new sources of inspiration in music that I haven’t heard yet. ![]() Certain Special Songs and Creative Music seem to speak to me/us directly to our hearts, minds and souls. I continue to search for the Positive Light which is found in different types of Inspiration. There has been a tidal wave of Negativity rolling over us for the last few years and it seems to be getting worse. I have been thinking a great deal about what I believe in… Love, Friends, Family, Creative Music and True Freedom of Expression. In these times of ongoing madness, I/we keep reaching for song/words to explain what is going on around us. Yes I believe in I believe in I believe in the web of fate The essence of being these feelings I'm feeling I just want them to last My relative motion is just an illusion from stopping too fast Triangular cover concealing another aspect from view I'm skippin' the pages of a book that takes ages for the foreword to end It's the aim of existence to offer resistance to the flow of timeĮverything is and that is why it is will be the line ![]() I'm seeing things clearly but it has quite nearly blown my mind I've fallen from favour while trying to savour experience I'm not even knowing if I'm coming or going if to end or begin I'm painting by numbers but can't find the colours that fill you in I'm reaching my nadir and I haven't an idea of what to do When I poison my system I take thoughts and twist them into shapes I can't feel the future and I'm not even certain that there is a past I'm losing control now I'll just have to slow down a thought or two In these times of contention it's not my intention to make things plain I'm looking through mirrors to catch the reflection that can't be mine DMG Newsletter for Friday, March 13th, 2020 ![]()
