Lim also has the power to let people relive key moments in their past lives, which proves to be a key point in One Piece Odyssey’s story. The other is the Waford native Lim, a young girl who has a deep-seated mistrust against pirates. One is Adio, a shipwrecked sailor who takes a keen interest in Luffy and the gang. To help freshen things up, One Piece Odyssey introduces some new characters. It still has musical accompaniment but it almost melds with the background instead of being on the forefront. A large part of this is due to One Piece Odyssey putting extra emphasis on environmental sounds whether it be the blowing wind or waves hitting the shores. The different locales also feel more immersive. It really makes it feel like you’re truly in a fantasy world, albeit in a different way from a more traditional setting such as Lord of the Rings. Like Akira Toriyama, I quite like Oda’s unique style for animals and One Piece Odyssey does a great job in capturing that with its compendium of strange-looking creatures. In addition to the characters, I also especially love the models for One Piece Odyssey’s various creatures. Luffy’s bug eyes admittedly come out looking a bit odd with this style but everyone else comes out looking great. The game also does a great job in recreating the One Piece crew for the most part. It doesn’t completely get rid of anime-style touches but the models look more fleshed out, literally, and the visuals in general have a more solid feel to them. The game itself has a more fantasy vibe thanks to a look that eschews the typical anime-style, cel-shaded style, opting instead to go for a more stylized 3D look. It’s an interesting premise that anchors the story and gameplay of One Piece Odyssey. Eventually, though, a mysterious power causes Straw Hat pirates to lose access to their original strength and skills, leading them on a journey to not only unravel the secrets behind the island but also regain their lost moves and powers as well. You spend your initial time on the island trying to find the rest of your crew while battling the locale’s native creatures - something that isn’t really that hard given how powerful the Straw Hat pirates are. While they survive the ordeal, their beloved ship, the Thousand Sunny, ends up getting wrecked near the shores of a mysterious island, leaving the gang marooned for the time being. One Piece Odyssey starts out with Luffy and the Straw Hat gang sailing across the seas before getting caught up in a storm of epic proportions.
